Notice of Race F2 USM/FSM 2008

This years' national F2 USM (Ultimate Speed Meeting) series will be combined with local events called FSM (Fun Speed Meeting).

Organisation USM
The organisation of the F2 USM is done by Stichting GPS Speedsurfing and is supported by F2.

Location USM
Strand Horst, Ermelo The Netherlands. This place is suitable even for less experienced windsurfers and has proven to be the fastest open water speed location in Holland.

GPS Used for USM
At least the top 25 Men and top 5 Ladies will need to use a GPS Device that can download trackdata with Doppler info (f.i. Navi GT-11). When a rider does not have such a device one will be made available by the organization (max 20 pieces). To see which riders have potential to be top 25 we will look at USM’s in other years and/or the GPS-Speedsurfing rankings.

Location FSM
Any spot in Holland. All FSM events can only be hosted by www.gps-speedsurfing.com competitors. Competitors can apply to organize one FSM series each.

Entry Fee USM
The Entry fee for the USM is 15 Euro for the whole year. Registration can be at all days that a call has been given.

Stand-by period USM
The following dates in 2008 are standby dates for the USM in the weekend:May 17, 18, 24, 25 (when the backup for the NK Speed is not necessary)
June 7, 8, 14, 15, 21, 22
September 13, 14
October 11, 12, 25, 26
November 1, 2
In the months June and October it is also possible to sail during week days when there are ‘hardcore’ conditions and the crew is available of course.

Note: These days are subject to change when necessary to avoid overlap with other events.

Stand-by period FSM
The FSM series stand-by period will last from the first weekend after a successful Dutch Championship or the weekend after the Dutch Championship stand-by period has ended up until the middle of November. No FSM can be organized during an USM day. A FSM will only be held during the weekend.

Calling a day
The first official USM warning should be given at least two days before the start of an official race. The final USM call will be given at the latest 24 hours before the official start. If the USM is cancelled the FSM organizer can give an FSM call until 12 hours prior to the event.

Information
Information to riders will be given via E-mail and/or the sites www.gps-speedsurfing.com / forum.windsurfing.nl

Time table
Normally an USM day will look like this:
  • Registration on the beach between 10.00 and 11.30h
  • Skippers meeting at 11.30h
  • First possible start at 12.00h
  • End of race 16.00h

    Depending on the weather pattern the time table can change. For safety reasons registration is obligatory so make sure you arrive on time. Official registration time will be announced on the info section with the official call for a F2 USM racing day or a FSM racing day.

    We aim to have a maximum sailing time of 4 hours per USM day. This can be made longer or shorter if necessary because of wind- / weatherconditions. The flag on the beach shows the sailing time.

    Inscription form USM
  • To be downloaded from the internet or on site on a racing day. Please bring the inscription form with you if possible.
  • We would appreciate it if you register in advance / subscribe for this event. you have to be a registered member of gps-speedsurfing.com. If you're not, you can register as a new member.

    Inscription FSM
    Since some competitors might not be familiar with www.gps-speedsurfing.com inscribing for the event is possible on the race site.

    Results
  • Log on to www.gps-speedsurfing.com and register for the event.
  • Post your results on the event section within 48 hours.
  • People not familiar with downloading of the data must report this at registration. Help will be available at the end of the day.
  • The timekeeper can ask your track for verification.
  • Make sure that the time and date on the GPS unit is set for the time zone of the event location so that the track log contains the correct times. This will be checked before the start.
  • Ranking will appear on the event section automatically and becomes official only after verification by the timekeeper. Anyone found cheating will be banned from future events.

    Safety
  • Helmet and impact vest is strongly recommended.
  • Colored rope attached to the boom for identification (distributed by the organizer)
  • All instructions by the organization must be followed. Not following the safety rules will mean immediate disqualification.

    Number of races
    The USM can have a maximum of 4 races per year:
  • This can be 4 weekend days.
  • Or a maximum of 2 weekday’s combined with 2 weekend days.
  • There can be two days sailed during a weekend.

    Minimum speed USM
    A day counts as an official F2 Ultimate Speed Meeting day when the fastest windsurfer reaches an average speed of 65 km/h measured over 5x 10 seconds.

    Minimum speed FSM
    The minimum required speed for an official Fun Speed Meeting depends on the location.

    Day ranking
  • Best average (5 best 10 second runs), and in case of a tie
  • Best ten second run, up until the 5th run, and then
  • Best 2 second run, up until the 5th 2 second run

    Results
    Final rankings are determined from the sum of points from each event, with points awarded as follows for each event1st place = 1 pt 2nd place = 2 pts 3rd place = 3 pts At the end of the season, the competitor with the lowest total point score wins.

    Discards
  • No discard with two racing days.
  • 1 Discard for three racing days.
  • 2 Discards for four racing days.

    When points are equal after all races
  • Best day result after discard.
  • Best average speed in any of the 4 events.
  • Best ten second run, up till the 5th run.

    RACE REPORT 28 OCTOBER 2008

    De derde USM van 2008 is er één met een verhaal. De condities veranderden per dag en wat begon als een solide call eindigde in een zenuwslopende beslissing omdat er op de Brace mogelijk records konden vallen terwijl het leek alsof op Horst de wind te vroeg zou afnemen. Na meerdere malen uitstellen hebben we op aanraden van Hans Kleingeld gekozen voor de derde USM. Hans was stellig in zijn mening dat het op Horst wel eens beter zou kunnen worden dan op de vele andere plekken in het land. Roger en Martin braken hun speed trip naar West Kirby af en reden s nachts terug naar Nederland om net op tijd de caravan met inschrijfmateriaal af te leveren op Horst. Vanwege de verwachting werd gekozen voor een vroege start en ondanks dit feit was er weer een massale opkomst.

    Gedurende de gehele USM waren er continu vlagen te vinden op het meer. De wind was niet zo hard als voorspeld en dat zorgde voor een tactische race waarbij materiaal keuze nog belangrijker was dan normaal. De meeste speedies hebben nu zoveel ervaring met het USM races dat ze een favoriete "USM set" klaar hebben liggen tijdens de start. Dit keer was de keuze niet zo makkelijk en velen vroegen zich vertwijfeld af of de set wel goed was. Er werd volop geëxperimenteerd met boards en zeilen. Uiteindelijk bleek speedy Robert de beste keuze te maken met een relatief goot slalomboard. Hij benutte zijn Horst ervaring ten volle en zijn licht weer king status die hij dit jaar overgenomen lijkt te hebben van een andere Horst local: Sander van Huizen, bleef overeind. Niet alleen versloeg hij zijn training maatje maar beiden waren ook nog eens te snel voor de onklopbare Peter de Wit. Het niveau leek nog hoger dan voorheen en de uitslag laat zeer kleine verschillen zien tussen veel surfers.

    Nog een speicaal woord van dank aan alle Belgen die de moeite hadden genomen om op de toch variabele voorspellingen de lange reis te maken. Het is ontzettend tof dat jullie de USM ondersteunen met jullie komst en we hopen volgende USM nog meer Zuiderburen te mogen begroeten.

    De bijgewrekt uitslag na drie races volgt later deze week.


    Race Report 1 october 2008

    October 1 2008 the second Dutch USM was being held. Even though we were forced to organize it during a weekday because of insufficient wind in the weekends over 100 windsurfers showed up. In the morning massive rain squalls nearly flooded away the cars parked on the grass but in the afternoon conditions got better with just some occasional squalls.
     

    On the North Sea three boats got in serious trouble because of the first fall gale and in West Kirby some great speeds were set with the help of the same massive frontal system covering the North of Europe. We were at the back of the system and it just scratched Horst. This caused the wind to be a little less than expected but still event winner Peter de Wit succeeded in squeezing out an amazing 80+ peak speed. 

    We are on stand-by until the first week of November and hope to be able to organize two more races. Let’s hope the forthcoming weeks will give us some more systems like this.  

    Eric Baardman shot some great photos which you can view on his website. The preliminary overall standing will be adjusted because we will deduct 0,28 knots for non Doppler devices. In close cooperation with Manfred Fuchs we decided to go for a 95% probability number to ensure a fair race and not create an advantage for non Doppler devices. With the highly appreciated support of the Dutch F2 importer all top riders who didn’t have a Navi could lend a Navi for the day.
