At present there are V1.2 V1.3 and V1.4 varieties of GT31 firmware in use. V1.2 is no longer supported by Locosys and V1.3 is destined for a similar fate, eventually. Version V1.4 addresses some reliability problems that GT31 Users have experienced.

To assist GT31 users to upgrade to V1.4 a
new firmware upgrade procedure has been developed in cooperation with Locosys. This procedure is compatible with all firmware "V" versions and involves using GT31Upgrader V0.71 or later in " internal " mode. This upgrader is zipped together with V1.4 firmware and update instructions for your convenience.

New GT31 firmware upgrade procedure is faster and safer for your GT31 than previously published procedures. For details and GT31 firmware download please visit http://mtbest.net/setting-up-navi-GT31.htm

Most problems i have noticed on forums with GT31 involved upgrading and later software versions, so it would be nice to read wich "reliability problems" are solved in V1.4 to make an estimated guess wether it is wise to upgrade my recently purchased GT31's... (as in previous cases said by several people: if it aint broken don't fix it).

Also I would suggest the GPS-SS crew to make a clear statement in the rules on wich software version is to be used (also for GT11) as the simple "use the last version" is not very accurate...
Hi!

The new method for upgrading the firmware might be safer (have upgraded a lot of devices without any problems, though), but is not faster since you have to flip that little lever in the SD-card slot. But I upgraded my two GT31s last night, and it worked without any porblems. Always nice to have the newest firmware!

Keep up the good work, Tom!

Thanks Jesper for your kind words.

Frank: New GT31 software is released because it is better than previous versions. Occasionally the update is not perfect, but this is remedied as soon as someone spots a glitch. So, if you wait a week or two after a new firmware is released and tested, the firmware should be fine. If you spot a firmware glitch, please
let me know.

Firmware on newly-purchased GT31 instruments lacks some useful features such as Speed Genie, compact and comprehensive binary logging, bio-feedback, SDOP and nice screen font, among others. All these features have been designed specifically for speed sailing in mind and helped many people to learn to sail much faster (myself included). If you never used these features you may not know what you're missing.

People at Locosys (maker of GT31) are quite smart and some of them, including the boss, have PhDs. Suspecting that these people release GT31 firmware upgrades to hinder GT31 performance in any way is not a sign of wisdom. Wise people aim for progress, because history of humanity clearly demonstrates that progress cannot be stopped.

Seems I hit a weak nerve...

Just to be clear: My GT31's are working fine, bought them with V1.2 B1405a  (official WGPSSRC allowed firmware) installed so I can use them with Speed Genie, SDOP a.s.o.  Please can some one tell me wich improvents are made or problems solved in V1.4 so I and others can made an educated decission wether to upgrade?

Locosys (GT31 maker) has never pre-installed 1405x firmware version in GT31. This firmware has only been available for download from
my website , so your local supplier must have installed it for you (or arranged it to be installed) without acknowledging the source.

My favorite new firmware features in GT31 are
  • a nice Large font (finally I can distinguish 0 3 6 9 and 8 on the water) and
  • green-led biofeedback
These features helped me recently to reach speed 43.36 knots (~80 km/h), even though I am a beginner in windsurfing and have problems with water-starts, not to mention jybes.

Life is too short to learn speed sailing by trial-and-error (and waiting for wind), so I started developing GT11/GT31 features to help myself and speed-up my learning process. Hopefully these features, like Speed Genie and bio-feedback help other people to have more fun too.

A thought of acknowledgment/appreciation would be nice, but for some reason it is rare: our
world becomes quite ruthless.

Yesterday we had the first USM this year.
I had a lot of people with older software on there units, but managed to get everybody updated to v1.4.
Most people in the top of the USM list used it :)
It should be mentioned that there is no (correct me if i´m wrong) way back to V1.2xx which is essentially by the rules at the moment for record members...
I've updated my GT31 with the 1.4 firmware last week. Works perfectly!
Appendix A
GPS Instruments approved for use in GPS-SS record attempts by the World GPS Surfing Record Committee:
1.1 Navi GT-31 with firmware versions V1.2 (B1405a), V1.3 (B1123T) or version 1.4 (B0315T)

Personally, I am sticking with V1.3 for a bit longer. :-)
I too have updated a lot of units here in Sweden now. No problems at all!
Since i have updated my gt-31 to the newest firmware I (and also other people) experienced problems with the 10s avg restorefunction. When you exceed the 65kmh 10s average speed the speed shown in the display is changed by 0 kmh, when you get 6610s run, you get a speed of 1kmh, 67 2 kmh etc. This is very anoying. Can this be fixed, and what should I do to fix it?
